This unit of study will focus on comparing different styles of government. There are many different ways to organise a society, some are purely theoretical and others a practical combination of ideas. The four styles of government that you will have the opportunity to research are, Anarchism, Communism, Democracy and Dictatoriship. Each will have both strengths and weaknesses, it will be your job to identify these and decide whether that system would work in the Australian context.
THE POLITICAL COMPASS
Before commencing this unit of study, it is useful for you to have an idea where you stand in politics. While our government and laws play a huge role in our lives, many people are guilty of having little or no appreciation of what they stand for when it comes to different types of government and policies. To enhance individual appreciation of the different schools of thought and paths of action in politics, an organisation known as The Political Compass has been developed. This will be the starting point of your study, and will help you to know yourself, before you learn the rest !
A large part of this unit of study and the assessments within it rely on individuals successfully working together as part of a group. Choose your group carefully, with the assistance of your teacher. Groups will agree to research one style of government in detail, so consider using the results of your Political Compass test to find likeminded workmates.
